Hultgren visits H.C. Storm School; gets
first-hand look at efforts to Make Kane
County Fit For Kids |
Congressman
Randy Hultgren visited H.C. Storm School
in Batavia Tuesday to get a first-hand
look at efforts by the Batavia School
District and the City of Batavia, along
with Kane County, aimed at providing
safe routes to school, access to healthy
foods and active living.
Congressman Hultgren first inspected the
soon-to-be-paved 800-foot gravel pathway
leading to the school by walking its
length, along with County Board Chairman
Karen McConnaughay, Batavia Mayor
Jeffrey Schielke, Kane County Health
Department Executive Director Paul
Kuehnert, Batavia School Superintendent
Jack Barshinger and Storm School
Principal Cynthia Sikorski. The paving
work will done using Safe Routes to
School funds.
Inside, the congressman was greeted by
Storm School students, and then was
provided a quick rundown on the healthy
foods served in the school cafeteria.
Once in the school library, Principal
Sikorski was able to brief the
congressman on the school’s and parents
efforts at providing a healthy
atmosphere for students, and Mayor
Schielke and members of the Batavia city
staff were able to list numerous
projects in the works that will allow
better pedestrian access throughout the
city.
Congressman Hultgren praised the
cooperation between the county, city,
school district and the community,
remarking that such a spirit of
partnership is the only way to
accomplish things. He also joked that
the folks in Washington could take a
lesson from such cooperation. As a
member of the House Transportation
Committee, he said he will be in a
position to fight for resources for his
district, even in the down economy. “I’m
seeing there still is great opportunity
,” Hultgren said. “You can see how local
projects have impact regionally.”
Storm
School also recently was awarded a
$3500.00 Fit Kids 2020 Implementation
Grant, provided by the Funders
Consortium of the Making Kane County Fit
for Kids Campaign, for updating and
replacing playground equipment. Storm
Elementary School also participated in
the Fit for Kids, walk to school day
last fall. The Storm parents, led by
parent Chris Prat, expanded the
initiative to “Walk to School Week”.
Batavia Public Schools received a $5000
Fit Kids 2020 Implementation Grant to
review and align the K-12 health and
physical education curriculum to current
national guidelines. |
