Vision & Hearing Program
Vision Screening Hearing Test

The Kane County Health Department offers Vision and Hearing Screening services to preschools, daycares, and private schools.  In addition, we screen children in the office with pre-arranged appointments.  The fee is $7.50 per screen. We also accept the Medicaid/All Kids card. These screenings are conducted completely within the school setting. Kane County Vision and Hearing Technicians use portable equipment in the school to conduct the entire program.

 

The services provided through this program include:  

Vision Screen (not an optical exam)

Hearing Screen

Hearing Threshold, when necessary   

Referrals for children who need follow-up with licensed Optometrist or Audiologist

In 1980, the Vision and Hearing Screen Act was passed by the 81st Illinois General Assembly.  Over the years many amendments to the Illinois School Code and the Administrative Code Chapter pertaining to Schools have been made in accordance to this law.  Those rules state the following:

 
Vision screening services shall be provided annually for:

  All preschool children 3 years of age (or older) in any public or private educational program or licensed child-care facility.

  All school age children who are in kindergarten, second and eighth grades; in all special education classes; referred by teachers; and transfer students.

  Vision screening is recommended in grades 4, 6, 10 and 12. Such screening services shall be provided in all public, independent, private and parochial schools.

Hearing screening services shall be provided annually for:

  All preschool children three years of age or older in any public or private educational program or licensed child care facility.

  Hearing screening services shall be provided annually for all school age children who are in grades K (kindergarten), 1, 2, and 3; are in any special education class; have been referred by a teacher; or are transfer students.

  Hearing screening is recommended in grades 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. These screening services shall be provided in all public, private, and parochial schools.
